But they have their strength too. I work with a Maori man and he taught me a lot about team work. Thanks for the great inspirational story It reminds me of Ghandi's quote :
A nations (in this case people's) greatness is measured by how it treat its weakest members.
I love your perspective on live. If you come to Christchurch my biggest wish would be if you have half an hour to talk about leadership to the kids at Unlimited. Just wishful thinking. I hope you are well for you seemed to have been off the air for a long time.

Yes many of the modern mountaineers appear selfish and I think this has a lot to do with commercial guiding and the guide only worrying about his/her clients, not other teams or individuals. Fortunately there are exceptions.

Last century amateurs came from clubs where teamwork, ethics and principles over-road selfishness, and the safety of all on a mountain was paramount, Often we would give up a climb to rescue someone who was injured and come back the next day for another shot at the peak.

Paterika, it is so good to see you back again so I will check your blog.

Take care

BobBob McKerrow - Wayfarerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13832128768908667724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199830678971482883.post-16715024199535336472008-08-11T07:02:00.000-07:002008-08-11T07:02:00.000-07:00Hi BobI find that the world has become to selfish....Hi Bob

I find that the world has become to selfish. This extract from the blog is profound:

""Everybody was fighting for himself, and I still do not understand why everybody were leaving each other."
Himalayan mountaineering is an inherently dangerous pastime, and climbers are always at risk from the unexpected. But mountaineering has become more dangerous in recent decades as the traditional expeditionary culture of the early- and mid-20th century, which had emphasized mutual responsibility and common endeavor, gave way to an ethos stressing individualism and self-preservation."

The late Sir Edmund Hillary spoke out against this very thing when that British mountaineer was left to die even though other mountaineers saw he was still breathing. So sad indeed. I cringed when I read about it. These 21st Century mountaineers are something else they seem to have abandoned the footsteps of the 20th Century mountaineers who showed bravery, nerves of steel drapped with teamspiritedness and compassion for fellow climbers. Can these mountaineers of the 21st Century be rehabilitated? I'm left to wonder.Paterika Hengreaveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09296611217840599396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199830678971482883.post-41503166053523565612008-08-11T01:57:00.000-07:002008-08-11T01:57:00.000-07:00Kia ora Bob, I have always been fascinated by that...Kia ora Bob,
I have always been fascinated by that story, by the bond formed in the face of fairly insurmountable odds. Thanks for filling in a few gaps about Gilkey. I have always wondered if he did sacrifice himself. One of those enduring legends of mountaineering I suppose.
Yes times have changed. Even in places like the Ruahines I tend to see very few names returning to favoured places often. There seems to be such a rush to bag huts, move onto to the next mission. Maybe I am just an old timer. I relish sitting by a river, or on a golden tussock top, wee dram in hand and relishing the moment. Kia ora Bob, to the old ways brother!
Rangimarie,
RobbRuahineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09398484733805119294noreply@blogger.com
